Honouring Len Armstrong
Honorary President of the British Dance Council
As we look ahead to the British Dance Council’s centenary celebrations in 2029, we are proud to honour some of the organisation’s most valued members and recognise their outstanding contributions to the dance profession.
Few individuals have made a greater impact than Len Armstrong, whose achievements as a champion dancer, coach, adjudicator, and leader have helped shape British Ballroom and Latin dancing for generations.
Len first gained international recognition as one of the most successful amateur dancers of his era, winning major titles including the World, European, British, International, and United Kingdom Championships. He later became a highly respected coach and adjudicator, sharing his expertise with dancers around the world and helping to uphold the highest standards of competitive dance.
His influence extended beyond teaching into leadership roles within the dance industry. He served as British Team Captain from 1979 to 1991, later becoming Vice-President of the World Dance & Dance Sport Council and President of the International Dance Teachers' Association.
His most significant administrative contribution was through the British Dance Council, where he served as President and Chairman of the Board of Directors from 2004 to 2009. In recognition of his outstanding service, he was subsequently appointed Honorary President.
Among many other honours, his achievements have been recognised through prestigious accolades including the Carl Alan Awards, inclusion in the Blackpool Hall of Fame, and multiple Presidents’ Awards—reflecting his enduring influence and exceptional service to dance at both national and international level.
Through his achievements as a champion dancer, dedicated coach, and respected leader, Len Armstrong has made a lasting contribution to British and international dance, securing his place among the most influential figures in the history of the British Dance Council.
The BDC Board are delighted to have Len Armstrong as Honorary President, continuing to share his wisdom, experience, and guidance with the Council.
